BLACK MEDICS UK

The Unacceptable Status Quo
The path to becoming a doctor should be paved with opportunity, not obstacles. Yet, for Black medical students in the UK, the journey is fraught with systemic challenges and a persistent achievement gap.
This is not simply a matter of statistics. It's about unfulfilled potential, diminished confidence, and a healthcare system that fails to represent the diversity it serves.
The evidence is clear
-
Black students are underrepresented in medical schools compared to white students.
-
Black students face a significant attainment gap, achieving lower grades and exam pass rates.
-
Black students experience racial harassment and discrimination within medical schools and training programs.
-
Black students often lack role models and mentors who share their background.
-
Black trainees are less likely to pass specialty exams, hindering career progression.
These disadvantages have real-world consequences:
-
Black doctors are less likely to secure specialty training positions.
-
Black doctors face pay disparities compared to their white colleagues.
-
A homogenous medical workforce leads to blind spots in patient care and understanding.

This can leave Black Medics feeling:
-
Isolated and unsupported, lacking role models and mentors who share their background.
-
Excluded from social circles, hindering access to networks and resources.
-
Discouraged by implicit bias, questioning their place in the profession.
We can do better! Here's how:
We demand change
-
Transparency and accountability from medical schools and institutions.
-
Targeted interventions that address unconscious bias and create inclusive learning environments.
-
Mentorship programs that connect Black students with successful Black doctors.
-
Curriculum reform that acknowledges and celebrates diversity.
-
A culture of open communication where students feel safe reporting discrimination.
